original materials: oil on canvas
This series began with the cat painted in acrylic, based on some graffiti I saw and admired. I set it aside for a few years. During this time I learned to paint with oils and to use a style more based on realism. I came across the cat painting in a closet and decided to add texture and richness to the colors using my new oil techniques. I loved the result and created three more in the series combining the color depth and textures I had learned in the intervening years with the vibrant colors and geometric styling of my older work.
I like to think of these animals as living on the periphery of human lives, foraging their food and finding their shelter in the things people have thrown away. Some of them may have started as pets, but they are considered pests now; poly-chromatic scavengers.
